Balancing the distribution grid · Belgium

The water tower of the electricity grid.

A water tower keeps the water pressure in a neighbourhood constant. repowr does the same for electricity: our grid buffers on the distribution grid catch surplus solar and wind power and return it when the neighbourhood needs it. That keeps the local grid in balance.

How it works

What a water tower does for water, we do for electricity.

A water tower pumps water uphill at night, when hardly anyone is using it, and keeps the pressure up during the day, when everyone opens the tap at once. Our grid buffers do exactly the same with electricity on the distribution grid: they absorb power when solar panels and wind turbines produce more than the neighbourhood consumes, and return it when demand peaks. Voltage stays stable, and the grid can take more local solar and wind without reinforcement.

What we do

From permit to 24/7 grid support, under our own management.

A grid buffer absorbs power when solar and wind produce more than the surroundings consume, and returns it when demand peaks. repowr takes on the entire journey: site selection, grid connection, permitting, financing, construction and day-to-day control in service of a stable grid.

Develop

We screen plots for grid capacity, zoning and environmental impact, and lead the full permitting process with the municipality, province and grid operator.

Build

Design & build with experienced system suppliers. We size each system to the local grid connection, not to a standard kit, to keep the cost per MWh as low as possible.

Manage

Our systems are controlled day and night to relieve the grid: charging on surplus, delivering at peak demand and stepping in when the grid operator calls for flexibility.

Why the distribution grid

Every neighbourhood its own water tower.

Large storage installations of 100 MW and more hang off Elia's high-voltage grid. repowr deliberately chooses the distribution grid run by Fluvius, ORES and the other DSOs: installations of 5 to 10 MW, spread across the country, close to the neighbourhoods and business parks where solar and wind already cause congestion today. Just as a water tower serves one neighbourhood rather than the whole country, such a buffer relieves the grid exactly where it is congested. It is permitted faster, built faster and strengthens the local grid in the right place.

Local grid reinforcement

A grid buffer on a congested distribution feeder reduces congestion and makes room for more solar and wind nearby.

Modest footprint

Containers on half a hectare, with a green buffer. No tall structures, no traffic after the construction phase.

Less grid reinforcement

A buffer in the right place defers or avoids expensive cable and substation works. That saves the grid operator, and therefore every connected customer, money.

For landowners

Your plot, a fixed income for thirty years.

Do you own land near a high-voltage substation, an industrial zone or an existing wind turbine? It may be suitable for a grid buffer. Like a water tower, it needs only a small plot and then quietly does its job for thirty years. repowr signs a long-term leasehold (erfpacht) or building right and pays an annual fee, independent of the electricity price.

Annual fee

An annual amount per hectare, for thirty years, agreed together. You carry no operational or financial risk whatsoever.

We carry all costs

Studies, permits, grid connection, construction, insurance and decommissioning at the end of the term are entirely at repowr's expense.

Your land stays yours

The land is not sold. At the end of the term the installation is removed and the plot is returned in its original state.

Clear, fair contracts

We work with a plain-language model agreement. You get the time to review it with your own adviser.

When is a plot interesting?

  • 0.5 to 1.5 hectares, flat and accessible from a public road
  • Within ±1 km of a high-voltage substation or distribution post
  • Industrial zone, agricultural land or residual land along infrastructure
  • No homes in the immediate vicinity

About

A Belgian developer with its own capital in every installation.

repowr was founded in Brussels by entrepreneurs with a background in industrial automation and energy projects. We do not build projects to flip them: repowr remains owner and manager of its installations and co-invests in every system.

Our first wave of three grid buffers in Flanders comes online in 2027. We work with European system suppliers, Belgian banks and public investors, and with the local authorities and landowners without whom no project is possible.
